JDroids FLL Team

This year, we extended our resources to create a new JDroids FIRST Lego League (FLL) team in Wayne, NJ. Run by Coach Karthik Ramani, we found that the creation of the team would be a great way of keeping the FTC JDroids legacy.

Community Service: Teen Help

AISES

American Indian Science and Engineering Society National Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota from November 10 – 12 2016. Our team captain, Anthony Tazzetto, is of Native American descent and spent time with Dr. Holly Pellerin of Fond du Lac Tribal Community College discussing ways we can inspire Native American children to become involved in FIRST robotics and pursue STEM education.

Mentoring OASIS

OASIS, an organization in Paterson, NJ dedicated to helping underserved women and children, started two FTC teams called the Orions and the Orbiters. The JDroids help mentor them, teach them about robotics, and the FIRST core values.

NJ STEM Girls

Kelly and Sruthi are a part of the NJ STEM Girls Steering Committee, to help inspire younger girls to pursue an interest in STEM. As a part of this, they help plan, organize, and hold NJ STEM Girls activities.

The Inspire Award Winner is an inspiration to other teams, acting with Gracious Professionalism™ both on and off the playing field. This team is able to communicate their experiences, enthusiasm and knowledge to other teams, sponsors, their community, and the Judges. Working as a unit, this team will have demonstrated success in accomplishing the task of designing and building a robot. The winner of the Inspire Award at each tournament level has received an automatic invitation to the next tournament level. Once a team has won an Inspire Award at a Championship, they are no longer eligible to win the Inspire Award at additional championship tournaments they may attend.

Winners of the Congressional App Challenge

Book Browser

AThe Congressional App Challenge is a congressional initiative to engage students in coding and computer science through app challenges that are hosted by your Member of Congress. The 2016 Congressional App Challenge will take place from July 18 – November 2, 2016, and students of all experience levels are welcome to compete. We created an application titled “Book Browser” that allows schools to share unused books with other schools in the district. We anticipate that this application will be used accordingly if Congress allows for it. We plan to enhance the “Book Browser” app to make it applicable for FIRST Teams to share their unwanted robot parts.

Think Award

“Robo-CATastrophe” New Jersey Regional Qualifier

Removing engineering obstacles through creative thinking.

This judged award is given to the team that best reflects the journey the team took as they experienced the engineering design process during the build season. The Engineering Section of the notebook is the key reference for judges to help identify the most deserving team. The team’s Engineering Section should focus on the design and build stage of the team’s robot. Journal entries should include those describing the underlying science and mathematics of the robot design and game strategies, the designs, re-designs, successes, and those interesting moments when things weren’t going as planned. A team is not a candidate for this award if they have not completed the Engineering Section of the Engineering Notebook.
